Early morning in the veld...

A misty start to the edge of day...

A beautiful gift for me in more than one way...

A young Zebra...

Just a baby...
goes over for a drink of mother's milk...
how lucky was i to get this shot :)

all done...

Baby walks off to nibble at the grass...
and Mom looks right at me...

Up ahead...another herd of Zebra approach us...

closer...
some head into the grass when they spot our car...

not these two...
they pause as if thinking about it...
discussing it...

the pregnant female is not happy....
she turns her head away...

she takes the course of safety...

A little further down that quiet dusty road...

THERE THEY ARE :)

we decide to creep up on them...
very slowly...
inching closer...
they know we are there...but if we move a the pace of a snail...
i can get close enough for a good shot...
not the one i want...but...better than naught...

Suddenly a cyclist in blue zooms past us...
and towards my lovely baby Giraffes...
the whole reason we are here...

The darlings prove to be really skittish creatures...
a little on the wild side...
lol
who knew...?!
we should have known :)

As the cyclist passes them... they make a mad dash across the road...
 and into the veld...

and as they run you can still see the cyclist on her morning ride...
disappearing into the day ahead of us...

They pause to catch their breath...

We try to follow...

but there is no road leading to where they have stopped...

I  SO wished i had a longer zoom lens...

free...
they choose...
to run once more...

We know we have lost our chance...
and follow slowly along that sand road...
that is like a vein on this beautiful land...
we look for other gifts...

there were many :)

It was a good day :)
